THE METROPOLITAN INSTITUTE
FOR TRAINING IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
Clinical Practice at The Metropolitan Center for Mental Health
Students see clinic patients at MCMH, a separate entity with which MITPP is associated. All decisions on treatment, patient assignments, or use of space at MCMH are in the sole discretion of MCMH's Director of Clinical Services or his or her designee. The range of patient problems at MCMH may include but are not limited to depression, anxiety, substance abuse, borderline conditions, pathological narcissism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and character pathology. MCMH has a team of psychiatrists, a 24-hour answering service for emergencies, a Medical Director, and full-time Administrative and Clinical Directors. Support is always available to students treating MCMH patients.
Students can fit their clinical work into their schedules, as MCMH is open weekdays from 9:00 A.M. - 10:00 P.M. and Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. MCMH's main office is located on the Upper West Side at 160 West 86th Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. A second location is at 336 Central Park West, at 94th Street. Both are convenient to public transportation.
MCMH also operates a satellite treatment center in
Washington Heights, which includes a substance abuse program in addition to
offering all of the current MCMH programs.
SUPERVISION
Candidates select an individual supervisor from the MITPP list of Supervisors. A
file of autobiographical statements from supervisors describing themselves
professionally, e.g., their training, interests, and approach to supervision is
available for candidates to review. Supervision is held in the supervisor's
office and is arranged between candidate and supervisor at a mutually convenient
time. A course of individual supervision consists of forty (40) weeks per year.
Candidates may opt to take a second, simultaneous supervision with an MITPP
supervisor at a very reduced rate. In the Adult Program, three (3) consecutive
courses of supervision are required with three (3) different supervisors. In the
Child and Adolescent Program, two (2) consecutive courses of supervision are
required with two (2) different supervisors.
PERSONAL PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
Personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis is required throughout the training and is the medium for attaining a deeper and more personal understanding of the theoretical and clinical issues under study.
Therapy/analysis must be at a minimum of twice a week. If a student is in treatment at the time of
application, approval of the therapist/analyst as a training therapist/analyst must be obtained from
the Director. A therapist/analyst who is a graduate of a chartered training institute with a psychoanalytic
orientation and has proven experience in psychoanalytic practice would, in general, meet the criteria for approval.
Fees for personal psychotherapy/psychoanalysis are arranged privately between
student and psychotherapist/psychoanalyst.
Students not in treatment at the time of application may, at their request, be referred to a
therapist/analyst. The Director will make every effort to assist the
student in locating a well qualified therapist/analyst whose fees are
affordable.
A student who completes training and wishes to continue working with a patient privately may apply to MCMH's Director of Clinical Services for permission to arrange a transfer into private practice. If it is determined by the Director of Clinical Services that such a transfer is in the patient's best interest, the student may then present this option to the patient. If the patient agrees to the transfer it will then be arranged.
